Reflections

Currently we are working on a project "Transforming the Everyday". The first part of my creative process was to brainstorm and to note down a range of possibilities, I produced a number of drawings to explore my initial ideas.

I liked the intersections created by the lines and wanted to explore these in 3d space. Perhaps by projecting them with a projector on a wall forming visible stars and constellations.

Thought of the pasta as a suitable medium to play with, liked it's fragility, and ventured to form a few squares with the glue gun. Found the process quite interesting and noticed the properties of the glue, stretching and forming filaments similar to a spider constructing it's web and integrated them within a pasta 3D frame.

Researched on the internet about stars and constellations and how to represent them in scale, thinking to  transform the everyday using size.

The picture above, clearly shows that the patterns seen from the earth are in reality formed be the viewer location and not by the position of the stars, which might be different if viewed from a different location. Tried few more possible sketches to represent the position of the stars, but remained with the original frame.

Liked the idea and tried to represent the stars of the southern cross using the following measures found on the internet and calculated using cm scale. http://museumvictoria.com.au and the tutorial sections on http://museumvictoria.com.au/pages/7573/the-stars-student-activities-1-4.pdf

With pasta I made the model to suspend the stars in the right position with the glue gun.

Notice Alpha or Beta distance from earth compared with Gamma and their magnitude or brightness.

To summarise, I have found the project very interesting and enjoyable. I have found the reflective journal very helpful to work with and reflect on the project. The initial ideas sketched helped me to brainstorm and explore different possibilities. Some of which were not fully developed, as is the idea to project the stars onto a wall.  I decided to discard it due to the complexity of the assembly. I have instead chosen to use a simple 3d model, a sculpture which the viewer can explore and interact with by viewing the southern cross constellation and observing how it changes relative to perspective and position.

I wish to encourage stargazing;
we often forget the viewer's point of view and believe it is important to question men's position within society, international relations but also within a larger context such as the universe. I would also like to encourage diminishing light pollution in major cities, and perhaps suggest a night without lights! Thank you.
